These Are A Few of My Favorite Things…

HI there! I know, I am just as surprised as you are. A blog post…on a Tuesday! Here’s my secret…I used that little post scheduling tool. Makes it a bit easier for me to fit an extra post in each week! Today I am joining a really fun link-up, These Are a Few of My Favorite Things! It’s all about this gift-giving season (and getting in that Christmas spirit). With Thanksgiving just a little over a week away, it’s time to see what’s on my wish list!

My Favorite Things

My Favorite Things by organizingatrainwreck featuring a flat woven wool rug

[one] This scarf is screaming “Rachael! Buy me!”, and I am trying to hold off! It’s the perfect maroon color (my college colors), and it will be just right for my winter wardrobe. Can Loft do no wrong?

[two] Leopard print flats, my friends. These suckers need to be in my closet, pronto! I have been searching for some cute, comfortable leopard flats, and I think it’s time to indulge. They are definitely nearing the top of my wish list!

[three] The Instax Mini 25 is pretty much awesome. It’s literally a mini Polaroid camera! Except it’s a Fujifilm, so I’m pretty sure it’s blasphemy to say the “P” word here. Anywho, I would absolutely love this camera for Christmas. It can fit perfectly into my purse, and I can snap a quick picture wherever I go. I love to make memories, and I especially love to keep them. This would be a great addition to my camera family!

[four] FLANNEL PJ’S. Can I get an “amen”? (Jess, if you’re reading this, I know you’re saying it with me. I have the pajama collection of a teenager, and I want to get the pajama collection of an adult with the heart of a teenager. These Target PJ sets? The answer.

[five] Rugs are always on my miiiiiind… This rug would be the perfect addition to our rapidly changing home! Hopefully, come spring, we will have new flooring downstairs, and this rug would look mighty fine in our dining room!

[six] Again with the maroon! Loft tops are my life, and this one is no different. It’s the type of no-collar neck that I love, and it just looks like it would be so comfortable to wear all day, every day! I hope it finds a home in my closet soon…

[seven] …again with the Loft! (Sense a pattern here?) Although it is winter, I still need to spruce up my spring/summer wardrobe as well! Jeweled tops are a hit in my book, and I would love to wear this layered or when the spring time comes around!

[eight] What better item to wrap it up with than…another top from Loft! This striped long-sleeved tee would be great for work or play…or whatever is in between! It is soft, loose enough, and just simple enough to go with anything!

We all love to get these wish lists together, but what I am most thankful for this year is the gift of celebrating with everyone I love! I am so excited for Christmas this year, it’s going to be a blast! What are you looking forward to the most this holiday season?

Oh Hey, Friday [Winter Favorites]

Happy Friday, y’all! I am feeling so much better this week. After a week like last week, it was the best thing to be free and be allowed to do what I want – even go to work! I was stranded yesterday (my car is sick), and I felt just how cruddy it is to be cooped up in the house. However, this time around, I did a little cleaning, organizing, and…online shopping!

I’m currently loving my job, but actively searching for another. I am in a field that is the opposite of my current field of study, and I  need, more than anything, to get an internship in my field. So, as winter fell upon us just two days ago, I began to look for some cute winter staples that will help get me through a few interviews, and hopefully will come along with me as I venture into a new position soon! I’ve been stalking different style blogs for some must-have pieces, and I’ve been checking in on some of my favorite stores (GAP, Loft, and J Crew, to be exact) for some good sale prices! I’m still on the hunt for one particular piece, but first let’s see what I’m bringing to my closet in the next few weeks!

[one] Starburst Jeweled Sweatshirt

imageServiceI am so excited to get home to this beauty on my front porch! This sweater from Loft will be the perfect winter addition. It’s perfect for layering, which is great for someone who works in a chilly office (me) and who likes to layer it up whenever possible (me)! It’s currently 40 percent off online, as well as everything else in the store, so check it out!

[two] Voila! Tee

cn8028857

This is a bit of a fun one for me; when I graduated in May, I pretty much cleared out my closet from any fun tees. Not only that, but I also tossed a lot of my college tee shirts as well, mainly because they had aged after four years of constant wear! So, in a grown up manner, I am adding back in just a few cute statement tees for nights out and weekends running errands. This tee from Old Navy is simple, cute, and not too obnoxious! It’s also on sale, but only because they’re almost sold out!

[three] Ribbed Cowl Scarf

cn8849501

I am in love with this scarf. I cannot lie. It is just simple, and cute, and will go with anything (thankfully). I foresee myself wearing this scarf daily, and I might even grab another before the season is over. If there is anything that gets cold on my body first, it’s my neck. And it gets painful. So this little buddy is going to be my lifesaver this year! It’s on sale at GAP right now for $19.00, and they’re also running a 30 percent off deal!

[four] Women’s Frost Free Quilted Vest

cn8149039

I don’t even know what to say here. I think this is just a piece everyone should own! Sometimes, it’s not quite cold, but it’s not quite warm either, and you still feel like adding some layers. A simple puffer vest is THE way to go. I already have this piece, and for the past few weeks where it’s gone between 40 and 60 degrees, this jacket has been a life saver. It’s cute, easy to layer over a sweater, and when you add a scarf on top, it’s just the right amount of warm. This jacket is only $20.00 from Old Navy right now, and they are also having a little percent off sale!

[five] Shearwater Boots

B4223_GY6754

This last item is my final must-have, but also the only item I do not own. Up until last year, or even the last two years, it wasn’t necessary to own snow boots. In fact, even now it’s not really necessary to own some crazy, heavy-duty boots like I had when I lived in Ohio. However, these shearwater boots are perfect. They aren’t too tall, they have a shearling lining for some added warmth, and a waterproof sole so that you can walk through the slush and “snow” that central Kentucky gets during the winter. They would be the perfect addition to my shoe collection…if it weren’t for the $150 price tag. So, I am hoping that J. Crew throws out a little Black Friday online sale (because I refuse to step foot in the mall on that day), and that before the big storms roll through, I will be the new proud owner of some stylish, practical boots!

What are some of your winter must-haves? I love to see what styles everyone finds as they find themselves having to bundle up! Have a happy Friday!

If You Make a House a Home…

I’m pretty sure we all remember those books. Whether we were reading them ourselves, reading to a younger sibling, or reading to our children, we know what happens If You Give a Moose a Muffin, or If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. You haven’t been graced by these hilarious books just yet? Well, let me give you a brief overview…

asdfawef

If you give a mouse a cookie, he’s going to want more cookies. And more things…and more cookies…and more, and more and more. Get it? Now, let’s move on to today’s subject, which is “If You Give a Rachael a Blank Canvas of a Home”. Can you guess what happens? Rachael will want to paint, and fix the flooring, and get new dressers, and get a $400 dollar desk because it’s perfect and would look fantastic in the neutral haven that is her office. See the picture? Well, Rachael was given hold of the reins this past Saturday with a LOVELY trip to IKEA. While I had to hold myself back on quite a few purchases, Zach and I began with some small details for our home. We found curtains for every window (except the dining room), the perfect lamp for the guest room nightstand, a coffee table for the man den, and even picked out our table décor for the reception! We went hog wild, and I so wish I had rolled around in the mud a little bit more. But, because I’m trying to space these purchases out (and am already planning my next trip for mid-October…), I held back, and decided to make some inspiration boards for my next three victims – er, rooms.

Insert Polyvore, the website I used to try to create stylish outfits on. They actually have home décor inspiration sets now, so I took full advantage, signed up for another account, and began to dream away.

Master Bedroom
This beauty is my master bedroom inspiration. It is actually based upon a few pieces that we already have (the bed frame, bed spread, and curtains) and a few dreamy pieces (of which most are an actually possibility!). We already have a brown-grey scheme in the room and master bath, so I’d like to kind of round out the neutral tone with some wooden accent pieces. Zach has given me free reign of the rooms with the exception of his man den and the dining room, so I am going all out with the dressing table from IKEA! I love it and it fulfills all my girlish whims. The dresser is also a hopeful soon-to-be dream. We have a GIANT ratty cherry dresser in the room now, and while it is great, it is just a bit too big, and looking a little too worn for my taste. Hopefully in the next year or so we can be working towards this. In the next month, however, we will be painting this room a bit of an eggshell neutral tone!
Guest room

Now onto the guest room. This room is actually on the top of my to-do list because…we’ve got guests visiting in less than a month! I am so, so excited for my best friend and her fiancé to come down and visit us for the weekend before my birthday, and I really want their space to feel like a home away from home. We already have the curtains for this room, which honestly has made a world of a difference in the feel of the space. It is more light, and looks HUGE, which is awesome. I also have the wire mail sort from HomeGoods (it is actually a bright aqua!), and my desk is not that white beauty just yet, but it functions for now. Unfortunately, most of these items are still not in our possession. I would love to get the dresser and bed frame before they come to visit. The bedding will be purchased no matter what, and the bed is still on a rolling frame, but this design just screams comfort to me. I am actually also working on a DIY project with an existing piece of furniture we have to create a white ladder shelf for the room to hold snacks, a clock, and extra blankets! I can’t wait to share the finished product in this room.

Dining Room

Now this…this room is a completely doable project…it just means we have to finish staining all of our furniture. We are planning on putting in laminate wood flooring in the dining and living rooms downstairs, and I LOVE this darker wood color. We have the table and hutch already (not these exact pieces, but very similar ones), and they are ready and waiting to be stained. This dark color would go great with a sage rug underneath the furniture, and some brown-beige curtains hanging in front of our large window! I think that Zach will be liking this design as it is very much his style (Me? Light woods and neutrals. Him? Dark wood and earth tones. Close, but a little off). I think that in the future we can update our four seat table with some new, dark wooden upholstered seats. For now, our chairs will do just fine!

If you have any tips on how to save, where to find bargains, or great DIY projects that can work for these goals, I’d LOVE to hear all about it! At this point, any little help counts!

I figured that, with this huge house update coming up, I would go ahead and update you all on my 101 in 1001 list! Since the beginning of the summer, we have either nailed or began so many goals, and it was about time I got it all up-to-speed.

Fashion, or The Most Versatile Word

Hi there and happy Monday! Today wasn’t a day I had planned on blogging, but a glorious snow day (full of rest and relaxation) has left me with the spare evening hours to write. And to smash in a few hours of studying and reading, because what’s a snow day without extra weekend-procrastination? Today, this entire weekend really, I have been thinking about one thing – fashion. I love clothes, and I love seeing everyone’s unique style. I think that even if you don’t put thought into your appearance, you still do in a way. You choose to wear something for a reason. I love my grey t-shirt because it’s a little loose, and so worn-in that it feels like a feather bed. Some people wear their Chinese Laundry wedges because they complement their adorable cropped jeans and flowing blouse combination. Honestly? I wish i had the eyes (and the wallet) to pull of the latter. My day-to-day attire generally consists of American Eagle skinnies, my black knee-high boots, and some version of my grey t-shirt, whether it be my blue-and-white stripped Express shirt, or an oversized-90s chambray I thrifted swiped from my mom. I really wish I had the eyes to see a piece that I can wear with three other pieces so I could create a complete but reasonable closet full of chic choices. So, today’s post is full of the girls whose style I admire; whether you run around in yoga pants, lie in a Mr. Rogers-esque cardigan, or are the envy of the office in a straight-out-of-the-glossy-paged ensemble, you have a style of your own, and you can always rock it!

[what i wore] Want a style blog that is full of street-smart, affordable, and ADORABLE outfits? Look no further than Jessica. She has an amazing philosophy about dressing to feel good, not to impress everyone around you. This standard and the endless fantastic outfits she pulls together time and time again have brought me around her blog for years!

[the//style//student] This girl is living the dream, no lie. Well, she’s living her dream, which should be inspiration to all of us! Nicole is a student at FIT in NYC, and does social media for Nanette Lepore (see: here) (also see: REALLY AMAZING FASHION LINE). She takes high-fashion statements and makes them wearable on the streets and in everyday life. She is a true inspiration, and she seriously has her shit together for someone at my age. Nicole, can you just be my guardian angel/muse?!

Image

[brooke’s nooks] Brooke is a twenty-something whose preppy style is honestly enviable! I love that she brings her own touches to her style each day, not letting the pieces speak over her. She rotates her pieces and brings new life into each of them by changing up the way she wears each dress and top. I love the versatility that she brings to her outfits!

[good life] Jill has an amazing sense of style and she knows how to find pieces that can be used in almost every outfit, which is impressive and honestly something I’d love to bring to my wardrobe. When I first stumbled across her blog I was amazed to find out that she is the mom to two kids! She seriously looks like she is fresh out of college, which just goes to show you that finding your own style can keep you looking fresh and young every day. No need to change who you are or what you look like; just get dress to impress (yourself!)

[sidewalk ready] This last blog is a recent discovery for me, but it was love at first sight/read. Let me tell you about Kayley. Girl has STYLE, and she shares it with all of her readers, complete with tutorials and wallet-friendly fashion-finds. It is seriously an awesome blog for finding outfits that call out to your heart and that you can take to the sidewalk – literally!

Each of these amazing women really bring the idea of confidence and loving yourself into their blogs and their everyday lives, and that is something I admire in each of them! If there is anything you want to change about your style, make sure you have those two accessories by your side at all times. In order to truly be you in anything you wear, you have to love the body the outfit goes on!

What is your go-to outfit? Do you have any fashion blogs that you love to binge on?
